Case Study: Strengthening a Critical Data Platform

The Context

DAL operates a complex data platform that supports essential internal services across the organisation. Working in a regulated environment, the priority was not replacement, but making the existing platform stronger, safer, and easier to maintain while live services continued uninterrupted.

The Challenge

As the platform evolved, several pressures became clear:

  • Key internal components, including a custom caching capability, were still at prototype stage

  • A large shared codebase had become difficult to navigate and onboard into

  • Documentation existed, but it was fragmented and inconsistent

  • Responsibility for critical systems sat with too few individuals

At the same time, DAL needed to protect service continuity and reduce delivery risk.

Our Approach

We embedded Turntabl engineers directly into DAL’s delivery teams, working day to day within existing processes and governance. Initial efforts focused on moving a prototype internal capability closer to production readiness, before priorities shifted toward the areas most critical to platform stability.

A major focus was DAL’s notification systems, which support day-to-day operational workflows. We improved reliability, resolved long-standing issues, introduced enhancements for new use cases, and strengthened monitoring and observability so issues could be identified earlier. In parallel, we supported infrastructure and cloud upgrades, delivering changes carefully and testing thoroughly to avoid disruption.

The Results

  • A production-ready notification service now used daily across the organisation

  • Improved reliability and operational visibility across core systems

  • Successful delivery of high-risk infrastructure upgrades with minimal impact

The Impact
